Minister of Labour Blames ASUU Strike for the #EndSARS Protest

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige has attributed the massive turn out of the #Endsars protest across the country to the prolonged strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Minister of Labour

The minister stated this at the ongoing reconciliatory meeting between representatives of ASUU and government, that held on Thursday, October 15.

The minister at the meeting maintained that, the Federal government is not trying to replace the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), with the University Transparency Account System (UTAS), and was hoping that the meeting will yield some good fruits to put an end as the continuous strike action, which is boosting the ongoing nationwide protests of #EndSARS.

The Minister also noted that the government has commenced the process of testing UTAS which ASUU members claim has the features of university systems. He stated that all the three stages of test will be concluded within the time frame the union gave the government.

Corps Members to Undergo Compulsory COVID-19 Tests

Following the approval of reopening of NYSC orientation camps across the country on 10 November 2020, the Federal Government, through the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 has ordered a compulsory COVID-19 test for all prospective corps members.

The announcement was made on Thursday, October 15, during the press briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19. According to the National Coordinator, Sani Aliyu, the NCDC has developed guidelines for the NYSC ahead of the re-opening of the orientation camps.

The statement reads;

''We have developed guidelines with the NCDC (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control) and the NYSC in the preparation for the reopening of the orientation camps on the 10th of November, 2020.

The PTF has also arranged additional safeguards to include the testing of all corpers and staff in the camps for COVID-19 tests prior to commencement of the orientation programmes.'' Aliyu said.

ASUU: Federal Government Agreed to Release N30bn Earned Academic Allowance to the University Lecturers

The Federal Government has agreed to release N30bn earned academic allowance to the university lecturers. This is part of the outcome of the meeting yesterday. It was gathered that the money will be paid in tranches between May 2021 and February 2022.

The federal government also promised to spend N20bn on the revitalisation of the education sector as part of concessions meant to end the seven-month strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

ASUU

The government team was led by Ngige, his minister of state, Festus Keyamo (SAN), and others, while the ASUU delegation was led by its President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi.

The meeting also agreed that if UTAS passed all the integrity test, which involve the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), it would be adopted for the payment of the University staff. Meanwhile, the meeting could not agree on how payment would be done for ASUU members during the transitional period of UTAS tests.

It said that the government side again appealed to ASUU to enrol on IPPIS platform in view of the Presidential directive that all Federal Government employees should be paid via IPPIS. It added that they can thereafter be migrated to UTAS whenever certified digitally efficient and effective with accompanying security coverage. The ASUU maintained that given ASUU’s invention of UTAS, it should be exempted from IPPIS in the transition period.

At the end of the meeting, ASUU agreed to take the offer to its members for consideration. The meeting is to reconvene on Oct. 21 for ASUU to report back on the decision of her National Executive Council (NEC), in order to facilitate the calling off of their strike.

Benue State Universities Students Staged Peaceful Protest Against Prolonged ASUU Strike

Following the prolonged contention between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), students of universities in Benue state under the umbrella of concerned Benue State Students have staged a peaceful protest in Makurdi on Wednesday.

Benue State Universities Students Staged Peaceful Protest Against Prolonged ASUU Strike

The students who gathered at the second campus of Benue State University (BSU), from where they marched to the main campus on Gboko road pressed the federal government to meet the needs of the striking lecturers.

Their leaders, Joseph Kizito, Students Union President of the Benue State University and Pius Adaji, Students Union President of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi while addressing the students, condemned the over six months strike and appealed for urgent resolution.

While chanting solidarity songs, some of the students carried placards with various inscriptions such as; “End ASUU strike now,” “Open our campuses,” “All we ask is quality education,” “No to IPPIS, yes to UTAS,” among others.

The students who ensured orderliness all through the march also had officers of the Nigeria Police who were on hand to forestall any breach of public peace.

AAU SUG Set to Embark on Peaceful Protest

Following the ongoing ASUU strike, the Students Union Government (SUG) of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State has released a press statement urging students to converge for a peaceful demonstration tagged #EndASUU_strike_FG on Monday, 19th of October.

Details of the press statement can be seen below:

Combatant greetings from the Students Union Government, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.

Greatest Aauites, you will recall that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared an indefinite strike to call the attention of the Federal Government, an action which as at now has spanned over 7 months.

Quite unfortunately, it is now evidence that the relevant authorities are little or not concerned about the welfare of Nigerian students, the supposed "Leaders of Tomorrow" as no concrete compromise has been reached thus far.

We, therefore, call on all students of Ambrose Alli University to converge at the school gate for a peaceful demonstration on Monday the 19th of October by 9am prompt and the protest is tagged #EndAsuu_strike_FG.

This protest is premised on the continued halfhearted and lethargic response of the government to the ailing sector of education in our great country.

We thereby call on all students to come out en mass as we send a message to the government that education is a right and not a privilege!

The struggle continues, Victory is certain!

God bless Nigeria! God bless AAU! God bless you!
